Tvn Laboratorio Natural

The TV show Cazadores de Ciencia (Science Hunters) travelled to the Great North to understand the potential for solar energy in power generation and water decontamination techniques.

The quest to find privileged areas in our country derived from their condition as natural laboratories led the TV program Cazadores de Ciencia, Chile: Laboratorio Natural (Science Hunters, Chile: Natural Laboratory) to travel to the Great North, where they found out about the work that is being done at Universidad de Tarapacá which uses solar power to treat water.

Lorena Cornejo, line of research 5 researcher (solar water treatment), showed Cazadores de Ciencia one of the main projects. It is the mobile unit for water decontamination in the Camarones district, whose objective is to eliminate high levels of arsenic, boron and pathogenic organisms which are harmful for health.

This is the only mobile unit using the power of the sun to treat water, which allows making this technology available for the wellbeing of the rural community, as well as other affected districts with the same problem in Chile.

During the show, SERC’s interest on the development of solar energy in everyday activities in order to improve people’s lives was explained as well as the unique potential of the Atacama Desert in the world that could even allow exporting solar energy to the rest of the region.
