Paul Werbos, director of the National Science Foundation, arrived to the country with his wife, Ludmilla. They both gave plenary sessions in EVIC 2014, The Latin American Summer School for Computational Intelligence, which is organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering of Universidad de Chile and the Chilean section of the Computational Intelligence Society of IEEE, where Paul Werbos is a member.

Werbos, well-known since 1974 when he described for the first time the training process of artificial neural networks, presented on Monday December 15 at EVIC with the topic “From ADP to the Mammal Brain and Beyond: Foundations, Roadmap, Challenges and New Options for Quantum Neural Nets.”

On Wednesday 17, his wife, Dr. Ludmilla Werbos, presented “Economics of Renewables: Finding the Optimal Degree of Integration into the Area Power System, Intervention and Control.”

Werbos’ couple also participated in the seminar “Renewable Energy Integration: Challenges and applications of Computational Intelligence,” in Antofagasta.

Paul Werbos’s visit also included meetings with authorities of the Ministry of Energy, CORFO and the Innovation Executive Board, with whom he evaluated the development of new technologies and how to raise the awareness on non-conventional renewable energies.
